Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that affects millions globally, with a high prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. It is characterized by the formation of sores or ulcers on the lining of the stomach or the duodenum, often resulting from an imbalance between aggressive factors such as Helicobacter pylori infection and protective mechanisms like mucosal integrity (Ajayi et al., 2023). The main symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, and vomiting, which can significantly affect the quality of life and productivity of affected individuals (Adeleye et al., 2024). In Nigeria, the management of PUD requires a multidisciplinary approach, with nurses playing a pivotal role in the care and education of patients.
Nurses in healthcare facilities are key in managing PUD patients through monitoring, administering medications, providing dietary counseling, and educating patients on lifestyle modifications (Omolara et al., 2023). Despite this crucial role, there is limited research on the specific contributions of nurses in managing PUD in Kogi State. Given the region's healthcare challenges and the high burden of gastrointestinal disorders, this study aims to assess the role of nurses in managing PUD patients and the challenges they face in delivering effective care.
Peptic Ulcer Disease can lead to severe complications, including gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation, and gastric cancer, if not appropriately managed (Suleiman et al., 2023). Nurses are at the forefront of patient care, but there is insufficient documentation on their roles and effectiveness in managing PUD in Kogi State healthcare facilities. This study will examine nurses' roles in providing comprehensive care to PUD patients and explore the barriers that may hinder effective management.
This study will be limited to nurses working in Kogi State healthcare facilities who are involved in the care of patients with Peptic Ulcer Disease. Limitations may include regional variations in the standard of care and potential biases in self-reported data from nurses.
